Gareguin Aroutiounian
(1951 – 2014)
Born in 1951 in the capital of the Republic of Armenia (Yerevan), he began playing the violin at the age of seven. He gave his first recital at the age of twelve and received a First Prize in 1964, after having participated in several competitions for young musicians, thus beginning his solo musical career in many cities of the Soviet Union. He also made recordings for radio and television and performed throughout Russia as a soloist, with symphony orchestras and chamber groups. After finishing his violin course at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he brilliantly passed the entrance exams to the Komitas Higher Conservatory in Yerevan. He was then invited to join the Armenian State Chamber Orchestra as a Second Concertino. As a member of this Orchestra, he played throughout the Soviet Union and in several foreign countries. In 1977, Gareguin Aroutiounian was a laureate at the V Competition of Performing Musicians of Transcaucasia and also received a Special Prize for the best interpretation of Khatchaturian's Violin Concerto. In 1976 he finished his violin course at the Komitas Higher Conservatory, specializing as a Musician-Interpreter and Chamber Music Teacher. He then trained at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of the famous Professor Belenky. After returning from Moscow, he prepared his doctorate at the Yerevan Conservatory, working as an assistant to Professor Villi Mokastsian. In 1981 he was one of the founding members of the Yerevan String Quartet, and this chamber ensemble quickly occupied a prominent place in the Soviet Union and abroad. In 1983, the Quartet participated in the prestigious Borodine Competition and was awarded the 2nd Prize. As a member of this Quartet, he performed in the most important concert halls of the Soviet Union, Europe, the United States, and Canada. He recorded for radio and television and also for the Melodya label. Parallel to his main activities, he taught at the Higher Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan. His students received important prizes in the competitions in which they performed. In 1989, Gareguin Aroutiounian was invited to join the Gulbenkian Orchestra, taking the position of Assistant Concertmaster and participating, as soloist, in the musical activities of this formation. In Portugal, he participated in the International Festivals of Estoril, Algarve, Madeira and Leiria, among others. As a soloist, he has played under the direction of Max Rabinovitsj, Manuel Ivo Cruz, Christopher Bochmann and Vladimir Stoyanov, performing works by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.
