Concert | Gregorian Chant and the Improbable | CANCELLED

30 Jan 2026 from 21:00 to 22:00
ISEG, CGD Auditorium (Quelhas)

ISEG's Cultural Commission kicks off its 2026 cultural programme with the Concert Gregorian Chant and the Improbable, of the IGL - Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, which will take place on 30 January, at 21.00, in the ISEG's CGD Auditorium.

“Originating from the Latin word improbabilis, composed of the prefix in (the negation) and the word probabilis (likely), improbable means something that is unlikely to happen; that cannot be proven or that has little chance of being true. There are two reasons why this concert has the very unlikely title of Gregorian Chant and the Improbable. Gregorian Chant is a genre of music that is more than a thousand years old and took around another thousand years to become established. We're talking about music from a historically distant era. No matter how many sources and information have come down to us today, and no matter how many decades of study we have dedicated to it, the reality is that we cannot reproduce it in a way that is surely authentic, probable... The interpretation of music from this period, even if it is historically very well informed, is an exercise in artistic speculation - something that is unlikely. The second reason refers to the way in which, in this concert, we have introduced a modern instrument, the piano, as improvised accompaniment. The aim of this combination is to provide an improbable musical experience that tests and expands the limits of creativity.” (Filipa Taipina, IGL)
