If you want to apply for a Masters or PhD at ISEG, then you've come to the right place. All the questions that you might possibly have about the application process are answered here.

What are the requirements for a Master's degree?

The main requirement for a master's degree is to have a degree in an area relevant to teaching. If your degree area does not fit the areas requested for a particular master's degree, your case will be analyzed in detail by the master's coordination team.

How can I submit my application?

Applications for master's degrees at ISEG are made exclusively online via the website. The application fee is 50 euros per course.

What is the deadline for applications?

Applications for master's and doctoral degrees for the 2024/2025 academic year begin on 4th December.

What documents do I need to submit?

When applying, you must submit:

  • Photography
  • Identification Document (Citizen Card/Passport)
  • Graduation certificate with final average and transcript of course units
  • Motivation letter: you should indicate on one page (maximum) why you are interested in applying for a master's degree at ISEG, your strengths, your areas of interest and what your expectations are.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Optional: certificate of knowledge of English or Portuguese (minimum level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for LanguagesTOEFL 70, IELTS 6.5) for applicants to courses taught in English or Portuguese (except national, Palop and Brazilian applicants). This document is not compulsory and it is the applicant's responsibility to have a minimum knowledge of the language in which the course is taught, except for the master's degree in Development and International Cooperation

Selection criteria in master's degree in Development and International Cooperation:

  • International students whose first language is not Portuguese must submit an Advanced Diploma in Portuguese as a Foreign Language (DAPLE) from the Center for Assessment and Certification of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CAPLE), with a minimum grade of BOM (70-84%).
  • Portuguese and international students must submit a certificate of knowledge of the English language: 
    - Minimum score of 185 in the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE);
    - A minimum score of 185 in the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE);
    - Minimum score of 7.0 in the IELTS Academic Test;
    - Minimum TOEFL iBT score of 94.

How do I know that my application has been validated?

In order for your application to be validated and forwarded to the Master's Coordination, you must:

  1. Pay the application fee (50 euros for each master's course)
  2. Submit all requested documents correctly

Payment of the application fee and submission of documents must be made by the last day of the application phase. After this day, the application will not be validated.

Can I apply without having completed my current degree?

Yes. You can apply for a master's degree at ISEG if you are a final-year student. If you haven't finished your degree yet during the application period, you must submit the official certificate of achievement with all the course units completed and, if possible, the final average so far.

If you are an undergraduate student at ISEG, you can download the document from the Fénix portal using the following steps: Fénix Login " Personal " Services " Applications " Create " Application Type: Select "Curriculum Aluno Fenix.

Final-year undergraduate students must complete their course by the end of September (of the academic year in which they are applying). If you are accepted onto the Master's program, you have until 15th October to send the certificate of completion with the final average, failing which the registration will be annulled.

I'm an international student. What do I need to know?

All students, international or not, go through the same application process, with the same deadlines, and must submit all the documents requested in the online application form.

However, international students should bear in mind that:

  1. International students (from outside Europe) are not recommended to apply in the 3rd phase due to the time it takes to obtain a visa.
  2. Brazilian applicants must have their documents notarized (in Brazil) so that the Hague Apostille can be placed on them.
  3. The originals of international diplomas must be submitted to Masters & PhD Office (floor 0 of the Francesinhas 1 building) as soon as you arrive in Portugal and no later than October 15, 2024. In cases where the visa is granted after the start of classes, the tuition fee for the 1st year must be paid in full. If you cancel your enrolment, article 10 of the master's degree tuition fee regulations applies.

What's the deadline for registration?

After your application and admission to the master's program, you must register for the master's program. You will have 10 calendar days after your application has been approved to do so.

The main requirement for a doctorate is to hold a bachelor's and master's degree in an area relevant to teaching. If your bachelor's and/or master's degree does not fall within the areas requested for a given doctoral program, your case will be analyzed in detail by the doctoral program's Scientific Committee.

What documents should you submit?

When applying, you must submit:

  • Photography

  • History of curricular units
  • Letter of Motivation: compulsory for PhDs in Management, Economic and Organizational Sociology, Development Studies and MAEG
  • Letters of Recommendation: two letters are required for the PhD in Development Studies and MAEG*.
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Thesis Project: compulsory document containing a summary description of the topic and bibliography of the topic you intend to investigate.
  • Certificate of knowledge of English or Portuguese (minimum level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) for applicants to courses taught in English or Portuguese (except national, Palop and Brazilian applicants). This document is not compulsory and it is the applicant's responsibility to have a minimum knowledge of the language in which the course is taught.

*The two letters of recommendation for the PhD in Applied Mathematics for Economics and Management (MAEG) should be written by researchers working in one of the scientific areas of the program. These letters should be sent by the authors to susanab@iseg.ulisboa.pt and they should:
- mention when and in what capacity the researcher interacted with you;
- to comment on their academic qualities;
- refers to the researcher's perception of their ability to work independently and produce research at doctoral level;
- contain the name, institution and position held by the researcher writing the letter.

How do I know if my application has been validated?
