On April 11th and 12th (Friday, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM), we host the 5th edition of the LYMC – Lisbon Young Mathematicians Conference 2025, an event co-organized by ISEG.
The conference is aimed at post-doctoral, PhD and Master's students from the Universities of Lisbon, who are carrying out research in Maths or related areas. Throughout the conference, the participants will make short presentations on their current research work.
The participation of prominent guest speakers will strongly contribute to the enrichment of knowledge, inspiring young researchers.

On March 7 (Friday), following the International Women's Day, the strength, resilience and impact of the women who lead and transform the world is celebrated at ISEG.
Starting at 6pm, in an initiative organized by CFA Society Portugal, we receive Madalena Talone, Executive Board Member at Caixa Geral de Depósitos and Board Member at SIBS SGPS and SIBS FPS, who will explain how a high-impact career can be managed with the personal life and four children, aged between 4 and 20.

This paper explores actual lifetime income inequality and redistribution over a large number of cohorts in Germany. Starting with the 1935 cohort, we document a secular rise of lifetime income inequality, both pre-fisc and post-fisc. The German tax-transfer system is linearly progressive in lifetime income and exerts a substantial impact on the disposable incomes of the top and bottom decile. Governmental income redistribution mechanically reduces lifetime inequality by one fifth to one fourth; the lion's share of this reduction is effectuated by the personal income tax. The rise of lifetime inequality in terms of equivalized income has been contained by a reduced propensity of individuals in the bottom quartile to form a family. Differential mortality is sizable but eliminating it would not markedly reduce lifetime income inequality. We develop a theoretically founded money-metric welfare measure that takes the value of greater longevity into account. We find that differential mortality is a major driver of lifetime welfare inequality.

In this study, we document and assess the relationship between railways and the spread of literacy in Spain. By mid-19th century, illiteracy was widespread across the country. However, this was also a period marked by the early expansion of the railways and the enactment of the Public Instruction Act of 1857, which introduced an education system. While post-elementary education (universities, institutes) remained under the control of the central administration, the provision of primary or elementary education relied on local forces, or municipalities. Within this context, we explore the extent to which the railways expansion affected municipal literacy growth between 1860 and 1910. To this end, we develop a novel database with municipal-level information for peninsular Spain. Furthermore, we explore how the railways could have stimulated the transition from an oral to a written tradition.
