Today, 17 October, we mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with the publication of the 'Gender Poverty Gap in Portugal' datasheet, published by the Gender, Labour, and Power Observatory of ISEG Research.
About 978,000 women lived in monetary poverty in Portugal in 2023, according to the latest datasheet published today by the Gender, Work and Power Observatory of ISEG/ISEG Research, authored by professor Carlos Farinha Rodrigues.
The analysis, based on data from the Living Conditions and Income Survey (ICOR, 2024), reveals that the poverty rate among women was 17.6%, exceeding by 2.2% the equivalent percentage for men, and overall 1% above the national average. In relative terms, women represented 52% of the population in poverty.
The study draws attention to the Gender Poverty Gap (GPG) - the ratio between female and male poverty rates - which reached a value of 1.14. This is higher than the European Union average (1.09). This indicator shows the persistence of gender inequalities in respect of poverty in Portugal.

Professor Antonio Afonso was recently included in the prestigious ranking of the world's most cited researchers, according to the August 2025 update of the study "Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators", drawn up by Stanford University in collaboration with the scientific publishing house Elsevier BV.
This recognition is the result of a comprehensive analysis based on standardised bibliometric indicators, which assess the scientific impact of millions of researchers around the world, taking into account the number of citations, the h-index, co-authorship and impact in different areas of knowledge.
From 20-26 October, there has been International Open Access Week, a global initiative promoted by SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), whose theme this year is: "Who Owns Our Knowledge?"
Open Access is one of the fundamental pillars of open science, guaranteeing that anyone — student, teacher, researcher or the general public — can access and share scientific knowledge freely, without barriers. For those developing a dissertation or thesis, this means more sources of information, fewer obstacles and greater academic impact.
In this context, and as part of the International Open Access Week 2025, the Francisco Pereira de Moura Library has organised a series of training sessions and events centred aroung the global theme "Who Owns Our Knowledge?".
