On May 22nd, John Turner (Queen's University, Belfast, Ireland) presents at ISEG the study "Prices and informed trading: Evidence from an early stock market“.
The seminar will take place from 13:30 to 14.00 in the Novo Banco Lecture Theatre (Quelhas, 4th Floor).
Free admission.
Abstract:
Using a novel dataset where all traders are identifiable, we examine trading in the shares of a major company on the London Stock Exchange before 1920. Our main finding is that bid-ask spreads increased in the presence of informed trades. However, we also find that spreads narrowed during periods of informed trading when such trades were timed to periods of large, uninformed volume. Furthermore, our findings suggest that professional traders consistently timed larger volume to such periods. Overall, our results provide support for the classical microstructure theories of informed trading.
With the objective to communicate and share good practices and educational experiences that respond to new pedagogical challenges, the OAIP - Observatório de Ação e Inovação Pedagógica (Observatory for Pedagogical Action and Innovation) has pleasure in inviting faculty and non-faculty staff to attend the following seminars on the 16th May, from 13.00 to 14.00, in Room 101 (New Quelhas) the seminars:
| Inviting Artificial Intelligence into the Classroom 13.00-13.30 Speaker: Professor João Duque (Dean of ISEG and a member of Advance) | AI is on the agenda and ISEG was one of the first Portuguese universities to propose reflection at institutional level (Pedagogical Council), which resulted in an official recommendation to the School. However, beyond this recommendation, academic impact can be established at the level of pedagogical activity, which is feeling under serious attack by its development. The aim of this intervention is to report on a concrete experience of a class taught entirely using ChatGPT, followed by some reflections and conclusions on its use, or on the use of other artificial intelligence tools. |
| Learning from feedback 13.30-14.00 Speaker: Professor José Veríssimo (Vice-Dean of ISEG and a member of Advance) | Academic feedback is part of the learning and development process for students. It promotes understanding of performance, increases motivation, facilitates the immediate application of suggestions, and contributes to the learning process. This session will share feedback practices and tools, making available templates for immediate use. |
The session will be delivered in Portuguese.
On the 15th May, Francisco Queiró (Nova SBE) will be at ISEG to present the study on "Fiscal Policy and Credit Supply: The Procurement Channel“.
The seminar will take place from 13:30 to 14.00 in the Novo Banco Lecture Theatre (Quelhas, 4th Floor).
Free admission.
Abstract:
We measure how cuts to public procurement propagate through the banking system in a financial crisis. During the European sovereign debt crisis, the Portuguese government cut procurement spending by 4.3% of GDP. We find that this cut saddled banks with non-performing loans from government contractors, which led to a persistent reduction in credit supply to other firms. To the extent that shocks to private and public spending propagate similarly, our estimates imply an elasticity of credit supply with respect to aggregate demand of 2.5. Our findings can help explain the protracted recovery of credit and output in Portugal.
