From creativity to solidarity: the winning projects of the Make-A-Wish challenge at ISEG

On 28 April, ISEG held the debate “Social Marketing and NGOs”, an initiative dedicated to the impact of communication and marketing in the third sector, which brought together students, experts and non-profit organisations. The event was part of an academic project developed in partnership with Make-A-Wish Portugal, an organisation that celebrates two decades of activity in Portugal this year.

Throughout the semester, students in the Operational Marketing course unit were challenged to develop integrated communication campaigns with real social impact. The projects included the creation of symbolic fundraising products, multichannel communication strategies and visual identity, storytelling and creative concepts aimed at reinforcing the organisation's mission.

The works were presented to the public at ISEG, in the form of gallery walkthrough, the event took place in the Cloister of the Quelhas Building, allowing visitors to see prototypes, creative pieces and strategic solutions designed by the students. At the same time, other ISEG course units have also developing projects for third sector organisations, namely for Novamente, as part of the Digital Marketing and Social Networks course, and for the Alegria de Viver Foundation, as part of the Digital Marketing postgraduation.

This initiative reinforces ISEG's commitment to practical and applied learning models, bringing students closer to real challenges and promoting projects with a direct impact on society.

1st Place - Wish Machine

First place was awarded to the project “Wish Machine”, developed by Andreia Gonçalves, Catarina Chorão, Inês Heleno, Mafalda Lopes, Maria Tomaz and Leonor Rodrigues, from class T12, supervised by Professor Maria Leonor Fontes.

The campaign proposes the installation of machines in high-traffic locations, with the aim of raising donations for the cause in a light and fun way, transforming the donation into a participatory celebration of hope. It is the physical point where three forces meet that rarely share the same space: the generosity of the public, the creativity of Make-A-Wish children and the mission of the organisation. Each person donates the amount they want and will take away a symbolic gift, personalised with drawings created by the children themselves. A special event celebrating 20 years, transforming solidarity into an interactive and memorable experience. More than just inviting the public to look back on 20 years of Make-A-Wish, the campaign invites them to be part of it. From the commemorative event onwards, the children take an active part in the campaign by giving identity to the gifts through their drawings. At the same time, the counter is visible on the physical module and monitors the collective construction of the celebration in real time.

2nd Place - Solidarity Concert

Second place went to “Solidarity Concert”, The team was made up of Carolina Dias, Catarina Chen, Catarina Simões, Julia Oliveira, Miguel Oliveira and Rodrigo Neves, from class T11, supervised by Professor Carolina Afonso.

Under the concept “Sowers of Wishes”, the proposal is centred on the “Garden of Wishes” event, a cause-related event in Lisbon with fundraising and a tiered sponsorship model. The event includes a stage with concerts, a solidarity market, workshops for children and a participatory mural. As a symbolic product, each participant receives a Seed Ticket, a star-shaped biodegradable card with seeds that can be planted at home after the event. To ensure execution, the team built an operational platform with backlog editorial 220 inputs for 7 channels, email flows and governance system with 14 fields per entry, allowing any team to implement the project from day one.

3rd Place - Seed Leaf Postcard

Third place went to the project “Seed Leaf Postcard”, developed by Mafalda Machado, Joana Salvado, Rafael Rodrigues, Sofia Carrusca and Maria Gonçalves, from class T14, also supervised by Professor Carolina Afonso.

The proposal is based on a postcard with embedded seeds that gives rise to a surprise flower, symbolising the process of making a wish come true, from the moment it is received to its realisation, represented by the fully grown flower. The campaign includes events in Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra, with the presence of Make-A-Wish friends, concerts and a giant pot where the public can buy and plant the postcards, thus helping to make more wishes come true. Communication will be reinforced on social networks, through partnerships with influencers and for the public to share the flowers they grow.

Title

Get My Money Back: The VAT Distortion and Related-Party Transactions in China

Abstract

Excess input VAT over output VAT cannot be refunded in China, creating a significant financial burden for businesses. Using a confidential National Tax Survey Database, we examine how firms manage their VAT payments to minimize cash lockup. We find that firms with substantial input VAT credit carryovers (IVCC) increase output credits through related-party transactions (RPTs). This effect is more pronounced among financially constrained firms, particularly when the related parties are subsidiaries of listed firms and when these related parties are capable of absorbing the additional output credits generated by increased purchases from listed firms. We further find that IVCC-induced RPTs negatively affect the gross margins of related parties, suggesting inflated transfer pricing. Following China's implementation of partial refund of IVCC in 2018, RPTs declined notably across the pilot industries. These findings provide empirical evidence of a mechanism for VAT non-compliance and distortion.
