The European Journal of Management Studies (EJMS) has organised its 3rd Annual Meeting at ISEG, on the 5th July, 2023, from 8:30 to 13:30. The event will take place in a hybrid format (in-person and online).
The meeting counts with the participation of EJMS editor-in-chief, professor Tiago Cardão-Pitoand the EJMS Associate Editorsthe teachers Carlos Costa, Eduarda Soares, José Novais Santos, Helena Gonçalves and Sofia Lourenco. This journal is owned by ISEG and is published by Emerald. Previously called the"Portuguese Journal of Management Studies", this is a plural and interdisciplinary journal which publishes research articles, case reports and book reviews in the areas of management of actual organisations.
On the 12th June, a seminar will take place on the theme of "Explaining wage differentials in the female-dominated long-term care sector: Evidence from Portugal"which will be presented by Viktoria Szenkurök, an economist by training who works as a professor and research associate (prae-doc) at Vienna University of Economics and Business.
Her research interests focus on inequalities, the economics of ageing and long-term care. She is currently studying for a PhD that focuses on internal and cross-country differences in the use and provision of long-term care for the elderly.
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to uncover potential drivers of wage differentials in the long-term care sector and to assess how these compare to other female-dominated 'caring' sectors (child care, health care and social work) in Portugal. We use matched employer-employee data from Quadros de Pessoal in 2021, employing a multilevel framework to identify wage gaps and potential contributing factors. Our preliminary findings reveal that the LTC sector exhibits the lowest average pay among all caring occupations. However, upon accounting for various individual- and firm-level factors, a more nuanced picture emerges. In addition, male workers in LTC performing personal care activities suffer from a significant wage penalty (compared to women). These findings hold substantial policy relevance, as improving working conditions, including higher pay, can enhance the sector's attractiveness for both genders and ensure an adequate supply.

Abstract:
Do people know their own risk preferences, or do risk choices change with experience and observation? We provide a straightforward test in the laboratory. People make an initial decision concerning a lottery choice and then experience 24 unpaid practice periods in which they roll the dice, record the outcome, and record the would-be payoff. They then make a final decision for the lottery choice; one of the first and last periods is randomly chosen for payment. Our primary hypothesis is that people will become less risk-averse by having made and experienced the practice rolls. We do find that people are significantly more likely to become less risk-averse than more risk-averse over time. We note that this move towards assuming increased risk goes in the opposite direction from what is at least arguably predicted by loss aversion and reference dependence. We find that women's preferences change much less during a session than men's preferences change. We feel that our literally hands-on approach ensures a degree of engagement that helps to accelerate the learning process. We argue that measures obtained after people have had experience with a mechanism are more meaningful, and that this principle might well extend more generally to other elicitation tasks.
On May 25 and 26, ISEG hosts the Iberometrics 2023 congress, an event that every two years brings together specialists in Iberian Economic History to present and discuss their research on Spanish, Portuguese or Iberian Quantitative Economic History, including the colonial period, as well as comparative studies that take into consideration the Portuguese and/or Spanish cases. The venue of the Congress alternates between Spain and Portugal.
