every year the Masters in Management and Industrial Strategy of ISEG organizes a series of seminars in which an external guest (expert) presents a current topic followed by discussion and debate, in order to associate and complement the topics with issues such as innovation and sustainability in operations and industry.

On February 22nd, João Madeira (ISCTE-IUL) presents the study "The origins of monetary policy disagreement: the role of supply and demand shocks" at ISEG.
Abstract:
We investigate how dissent in the FOMC is affected by structural macroeconomic shocks obtained using a medium-scale DSGE model. We find that dissent is less (more) frequent when "demand" ("supply") shocks are the predominant source of inflation fluctuations. In addition, supply shocks are found to raise private sector forecasting uncertainty about the path of interest rates. Since "supply" shocks impose a trade-off between inflation and output stabilization while "demand" shocks do not, our findings are consistent with heterogeneous preferences over the dual mandate among FOMC members as a driver of policy disagreement.

Europe's largest conference on Development Studies, the EADI CEsA Lisbon Conference 2023: Towards New Rhythms of Development, will take place at ISEG between the 10th and 13th of July 2023.

On the 15th of February, Ourania Karakosta (University of Ioannina, Greece), presents at ISEG the study “Can Self-Preferencing Reduce Pollution?, carried out jointly with Filomena Garcia (Indiana University, USA) and Theodosia Stavroulaki (Gonzaga University, USA).
Abstract:
Platforms have the ability and incentives to favor their own products and services over those offered by competitors on the same platform– a practice known as self-preferencing. An example would be Amazon branded products to be ranked higher than similar third-party sellers' products in consumer search results. Competition authorities around the globe generally oppose self-preferencing mainly because of its anti-competitive effects. In this paper, we ask whether this should be the case in a framework with environmentally aware consumers in which an intermediary is integrated with the environmentally friendlier firm. We show that a ban in self-preferencing (which in our case is a ban in steering consumers towards the eco-friendly variant), worsens the outcome in mature markets in which the environmental market is covered. Surprisingly, this result is reversed in non-covered markets where we find that it promotes environmental sustainability. Moreover, a ban in self-preferencing may have a negative effect on consumer surplus. Our paper also explains how sustainability benefits could be incorporated into an antitrust analysis.
The last seminar in the CEsA Thinks Seminar Cycle will address the effect of climate change on large-scale food distribution in Nigeria.
Entitled “Effects of Climate Change on Businesses in Retail Food Industry and Responses in Nigeria”, the session will feature Auta Elisha Menson (Kaduna State University, Nigeria), who will assess the effects of climate change on large-scale food distribution in Nigeria. The debate will be led by Vincent Agulonye (CEsA/CSG/ISEG/ULisboa).

Adriana Marotti is an Associate Professor of Business Administration in the area of Production and Operations at FEA/USP.
She has a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of São Paulo (1993), a master's degree (2006) and a doctorate (2010) in Production Engineering from the University of São Paulo.
He has experience in the automotive industry in the areas of quality and strategy.
He researches in the areas of: Innovation and Technology Management in the Automotive Industry, Transitions to Sustainability and Circular Economy.
She is President of the Undergraduate Committee at FEA/USP, Coordinator of the Degree in Business Administration, editor-in-chief of REGE - Revista de Gestão da USP, a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Automotive Technology and Management (IJATM) and a member of the Steering Committee of Gerpisa (The International Network of Automobile). She is also a Visiting Professor at Fudan University (Fudan Development Institute), China.
