ISEG's new series of research seminars begins again on September 21, with the presentation of the study "Consumer Condence and Stock Markets' Returns", by Raquel Gaspar (ISEG) and Xu Jiaming (Haitong Securities, China), which will be presented by Professor Raquel Gaspar.
The research seminars will take place from September 21 to December 14, on Wednesdays, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, at the Novo Banco Amphitheater (Quelhas Building, 4th floor).
Faculty from ISEG and other national and international schools will participate in the sessions, when they will address topics related with Economics, Management, Finance, Social Sciences, and Mathematics.

The planet is going through challenging times with different (mega) trends co-existing, sometimes in a contradictory manner.
De-globalisation, higher levels of economic growth, innovation and competitiveness, a (gradually) changing balance of global power, pandemic threats, decarbonised economies, environmental sustainability and biodiversity, while securing employment and growth as well as a fair distribution of wealth: these are some of the fundamental questions that policy makers (and citizens at large) shall tackle.
Governments, agencies and promotional financial institutions play a vital role in facing these challenges, to overcome market failure, and make public and private interests compatible.
Public policy banks can leverage private sector investments with appropriate and fair incentives, in order to complement government actions and deploy public goods and services efficiently.
Portugal has made important steps in this area particularly to foster innovative renewable energy, sustainable mobility, urban renewal and energy efficiency, protect the ocean and promote a sustainable blue economy, and create an innovation ecosystem that has already generated some of the most prominent unicorns in Europe.

Public investment policies in land transport over the last 50 years have contributed to an unsustainable territorial organization model with high socio-economic and environmental impacts, some of which will be very difficult to reverse in the medium term.
Eurostat data for 2020 shows that Portugal has the third largest number of freeways per capita in the EU27. While in 1986, the year Portugal joined the then EEC, it had one of the lowest number of freeways among European countries, with around 200 km, since then the network has grown rapidly. By the year 2000, the density of the network had already surpassed that of countries like Germany and the Netherlands, for example, and reached its peak in 2014 with 3065 kms. Portugal is still the only country in continental Europe with a freeway network larger than the rail network.
But what impact has all this investment had on the territory?
Researchers from the TiTuSS project - Economic, Social and Environmental Impacts of the Expansion of the Transport Network and its Effects on the Urban System - coordinated by the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), analyzed the territorial impacts of freeways in Portugal.
Find out about the main results of the project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) at a seminar which will take place at Urban Information Center of Lisbon (CIUL), on September 21st, at 14.30.
The seminar will discuss and reflect on the role of the transport system in the territorial sustainability of the economic development model, and will also feature presentations by other speakers who will talk about the dynamics of urban expansion in the AML and the role of transport policies.

A seminar on "Special Economic Zones in Africa and the case of Angola: potential and obstacles" will be held at ISEG on September 14 at 6pm.
This seminar is being held as part of the African Economics course of the Master's Degree in Desenvolvimento e Cooperação Internacional.

A webinar on "The importance of groundwater for sustainability in the tropics", between 10:30 and 11:30.
This webinar is organized by CTROP (Tropical College of the University of Lisbon), of which ISEG is a full member.
Groundwater makes a fundamental contribution to sustainability in tropical regions. The underground part of the water cycle, which we don't see and often know little about, is an essential water resource for guaranteeing drinking water for populations, irrigation needs for agriculture, food safety, hygiene and health, ecosystems and biodiversity, climate change mitigation. It can also play an indirect role in reducing poverty and inequality, education and gender equality, peace.
In this webinar, Teresa Melo and João Nascimento, researchers at CERIS, Instituto Superior Técnico-ULisboa, will talk about their experiences in Cape Verde, Mozambique, East Timor, Angola, Guatemala, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Chile.

The European Journal of Management Studies (EJMS) is organizing its 2nd edition.na Annual Meeting, which will take place at ISEG, on the 7' of July, 2022, from 8.30 to 13.30.
This Journal, that is currently published by Emerald, and which was previously-known as the Portuguese Journal of Management Studies, is a pluralist and interdisciplinary journal which publishes research papers, case reports, and book reviews related to the management of real-life organizations. ISEG is the base of this Journal.

Marta Da Pian, PhD (Customer Consultant for Life Sciences @Elsevier)
In 2019 Marta joined Elsevier as a European Customer Consultant for Life Sciences solutions. As a hobby, she collaborates with the Forensic Chemistry research group at the University of Padua. Marta earned her M.Sc. in Chemistry in 2013 in a joint project between the University of Padua and the University of Twente, working on bioactive materials based on polymeric nanoblends. In 2018 she completed her PhD at University Ca' Foscari of Venice. In 2016 she conducted part of her PhD at Freie Universität Berlin in Prof. Schalley Lab and was awarded with the Reaxys - Italian Chemical Society Young Researcher Award. She then studied for a Post-Doc at the University of Padua on developing antibody drug systems designed for cancer diagnosis and therapy.
She is the coordinator of the Young Group of Societá Chimica Italiana (SCI), the young representative for the Organic Chemist Division, and the Italian delegate for the International Younger Chemists Network.
Marta Meazza, PhD (Scientific Editor @Elsevier)
Marta received her Master degree in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Milan in 2012. She was awarded her PhD in Organic Chemistry in 2016 from the University of Southampton (UK), this was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, and then another at the University of Southampton (Horizon 2020). After a short experience in a pharmaceutical company, she joined Elsevier as the first Scientific Editor of the Tetrahedron Chem journal. Since 2013, Marta has published 36 papers and has been an active reviewer for leading journals in the field. She specializes in organic synthesis, methodology, in particular organocatalysis, synergistic catalysis, and photocatalysis.
Sarah Clichet Rodrigues, PhD (Academic Consultant @Elsevier)
Sarah holds a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science, with a PhD in Hematology, Oncology, and Biotherapies. Since 2017 she supports academic institutions and authors as an Academic Consultant at Elsevier. In her role she helps researchers and students make the best use of tools to support their scientific workflow. As hobbies she helps PhD students to explore 'alternative' careers, as a member of Cheeky Scientist, and provides support as a Chemins D'avenir patron, mentoring high school students from rural areas in their higher education and career future.
On May 28th, ISEG will host the CRiCity Project Final Conferencewith the theme "Children and their Right to the City - Fighting urban inequality through the participatory design of child-friendly cities".
