ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics & Management, hereby pays a heartfelt tribute to alumnus Carlos Silveira, who died yesterday, the 24th November 2024, aged 99, leaving an invaluable legacy of generosity and vision for future generations.
Carlos Silveira graduated in Economic and Financial Sciences (Diplomatic, Consular, and Customs Section) in 1950, from the then ISCEF, where he met his wife, Otelinda Silveira, who graduated in Finance in 1951 from the same university. United by a life dedicated to the civil service and a deep sense of solidarity, they both had an exemplary professional career: Carlos Silveira worked for the Lisbon Municipality, the General Customs Directorate, and then as a Social Welfare Inspector, while Otelinda worked for the Ministry of Overseas Territories, the Lisbon Municipality, and the Post Office, where she retired after having been the chief economist.
in 2018, the couple's commitment to supporting humanitarian and social causes culminated in the creation of the Otelinda and Carlos Silveira Merit Scholarship, a fund worth 750,000 euros for subsidising the tuition fees of ISEG's best Bachelors students who plan to go on to study for a Masters at the same university. The scholarship is awarded to the best student in each of the six degrees every year, for a maximum of 25 academic years.
This initiative, which was designed in collaboration with ISEG, reflects Carlos and Otelinda Silveira's desire to encourage continuous study and reward academic merit. As Carlos Silveira himself said: "There's nothing extraordinary about this. It represents support for students who want to study for a Masters, but cannot afford to do so. We're happy to have been able to support many people over a long period of time."
In recognition of this exceptional gesture of philanthropy, the hall on the 4th floor of the Quelhas building, next to the Salão Nobre Great Hall, was named the Espaço Otelinda and Carlos Silveira.
Carlos Silveira will forever be remembered at ISEG as an inspiring example of altruism and dedication to academia, who helped to shape the future of countless young people, while reinforcing the transformative role of education.
Thank you, Carlos Silveira. Your legacy will be a guiding light for many generations.

In 2024, the Alumni Económicas -- the ISEG Alumni Association -- is once again organising the Alumni Day Solidarity Gala Dinner in conjunction with Gala Solidária.
The objective of this dinner is to raise funds for the Alumni Económicas Solidarity Programme, securing its continuity. Alumni Económicas seeks to ensure that all students have the right to the opportunity to attend higher education and that no talent is hindered by clearly-proven financial disadvantage.
In the 2023/24 Academic Year, Alumni Económicas supported 14 1st Cycle students with proven financial needs, out of almost 20 applications.
Aware of its social responsibility and the difficult period in which displaced students continue to live, especially with regard to the cost of accommodation in the Lisbon region and other expenses associated with the cost of living, Alumni Económicas intends to continue supporting even more ISEG students and has therefore extended the program to 2nd Cycle students during the current 2024/25 Academic Year.
The dinner will take place on 24th October, at 19.00, in the ISEG, in the marquee put up on the Patio das Francesinhas, where the Career Awards and the Former Student of the Year Awards will also be presented.
This will be a day of celebration shared by alumni, faculty, students, members of staff, and friends of ISEG, and we hope to be able to count on your attendance.
Please confirm your registration, by the 10th October HERE.
See you on the 24th October at ISEG!
