Real domestic effects of banks’ cross-border lending

Abstract

In this paper we investigate empirically whether having a domestic banking sector that lends more abroad is beneficial for the productivity of the domestic real economy. We investigate this question by using both cross-country / cross-sector and within-country / cross-firm panel data, thus providing aggregate and micro evidence. The analysis, that comprises the estimation of several OLS, system GMM, local projection and IV models, points to the beneficial role of a higher internationalisation of the domestic banking system on the productivity of the domestic economy. Results emerge both when using cross-country / cross-sector data from a panel of European economies, and when adopting a more granular approach by using UK company and bank panel data. This effect is stronger when the domestic banking system lends more to companies in foreign advanced economies, is not limited to exporting companies, and is more pronounced during the early phase of a new banking relationship. In contrast, the inflow of lending from foreign banks does not result in productivity improvements for the domestic real economy.

The Greener, the Better? Evidence from Government Contractors

Abstract

Governments support the green transition through green public procurement. Using US data, this paper provides the first empirical analysis of the causal effects of green contracts on corporate greenhouse gas emissions and economic performance. We focus on an affirmative programme for sustainable products, which represents one-sixth of the total federal procurement budget, and publicly traded firms, which account for one-third of total US emissions. Our results show that securing green contracts reduces emissions relative to firm size and increases productivity. We find no evidence that the programme selects greener firms, nor that green public procurement sales crowd out private sales.

Throughout the semester, the students of Operational Marketing developed integrated communication campaigns, including the creation of a symbolic product with fundraising potential; the development of a strategic multi-channel communication plan; and the construction of creative concepts, visual identity and storytelling.

The result of this work will be presented to the public in the format of a gallery walkthrough, an immersive exhibition where students will show prototypes, creative pieces and strategic solutions designed to reinforce Make-A-Wish's mission.

ISEG Alumni Económicas elects new Board of Directors for 2026-2028

ISEG Alumni Económicas - the ISEG Alumni Association - has elected the new governing bodies that will lead the Association for the three-year period 2026-2028. The new leadership, led by Sandra Alvarez, takes over the chair of the Board of Directors in the year that marks the Association's 35th anniversary, bringing institutional continuity and a renewed ambition for growth.

The new team includes professionals of recognised merit in the areas of management, finance, marketing, communication, media and entrepreneurship, all of them alumni of ISEG, committed both to the sustained development of the community and the creation of value for its members throughout their professional lives, as well as to the contribution of this community to wider society.

“ISEG doesn't end at graduation. This is the end of the beginning of a new cycle in which ISEG Alumni Económicas begins. This mandate is a commitment to relevance, sustainability and real impact on the lives of our alumni.” - Sandra Alvarez, Chair of the Board of ISEG Alumni Económicas

After the election, which took place on 10 April, the principal mission for this new mandate is clear: to raise the profile of ISEG Alumni Económicas among students, alumni, the academic community and society in general, with the aim of increasing the Association's relevance and performance. For the three-year period, the Board of Directors has defined four guiding strategic objectives:

The mandate's action plan is organised around seven pillars: Communication and Notoriety; Institutional Sponsors and Strategic Partnerships; Community and Membership Growth; Events, Networking and Alumni Experience; Mentoring and Development; Social Impact and Solidarity Programme; and Integration with ISEG/ISEG EE and Students.

This structure is complemented by two strategic support hubs: the International and Thematic Hubs - with plans to expand to four new international hubs, in addition to the existing ones in Angola, Paris, Dublin and London - and the Strategic Boards, which will continue to be active in the areas of Digital Transformation, Health Economics, Entrepreneurship, & Venture Capital and Leadership, with the planned creation of a new Innovation Board.

Each member of the Board has an assigned area of responsibility, with specific objectives and actions defined for the mandate.
