In short, 30 students will embark on a unique journey, starting with a train trip from various Unite! institutions to UPC Barcelona and continuing on to Grenoble INP-UGA. Along the way, the students will take part in various non-academic activities and when they reach their destination, they'll continue with team-building exercises and, naturally, academic study. However the journey begins even before departure, with around 6 hours of online lectures the week before, which provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills required for the programme ahead.
What will the participants learn?
Throughout the programme, participants will have the opportunity to explore the themes of Green Mobility and intercultural skills through a combination of online training, lectures, and hands-on activities. Guided by expert professors and guest speakers, this programme offers a unique opportunity to acquire practical skills and interdisciplinary knowledge about sustainable mobility, while promoting a more in depth understanding of different cultures.
The experts will lead debates on topics such as urban mobility, sustainable transport systems and innovations, corporate social responsibility and cultural diversity. Participants will enrich their understanding of these critical issues through engaging workshops and interactive sessions.
The programme is worth 3 credits (ECTS).
Note: Individual applicants should check with their home university to make sure that the ECTS specified are recognised for their own degree.

Professor Adelino Torres left us on the 4th March. A true cornerstone of the building that is ISEG, Adelino Torres was a professor and researcher at our School from 1976 to 2009, when he retired as full professor of Economics. With a degree and Masters in Sociology from the University of Paris-Sorbonne, he was supervised by Georges Balandier, a professor and leading intellectual at that university and proponent of a new vision of African studies, an area of research and teaching so dear to Adelino Torres. Later on, he studied for a PhD in Economics at ISEG/UTL under Francisco Pereira de Moura, an unforgettable figure at our school. He held various positions in management bodies during his time as a professor, such as Chair of the Pedagogical Council and Head of the Department of Economics. He was a great enthusiast and promoter of Development Studies and African Studies in particular. In this vein, he was the Coordinator of the Master in Development and International Cooperation and was one of those responsible for its creation. His published work is vast and includes ten books. The Portuguese Empire between the Real and the Imaginary (1991) or African Development Horizons on the Threshold of the 21st Century (1999), dozens of articles in national and foreign academic journals, book chapters or even a visiting professor in Portugal and abroad, with numerous participations in conferences, colloquia and seminars. The supervision of a large number of master' and PhD dissertations and theses completes his dedication to our School and the Academy. The recognition of his scientific rigour and his human qualities justified important institutional invitations, such as, for example, being a delegate of the ESF - European Science Foundation in Portugal, or a member of the International Academy of Portuguese Culture. However, Adelino Torres was not only an excellent professor and researcher, he has a vast poetic oeuvre comprising seven books, the latest of which dates from 2014. However, this verve had its beginnings at the end of the 1950s in Luanda, then a colony of Portugal, and materialized in the publication of a collective work in 1961. Imbued with a nationalist and anti-colonial spirit, he attracted the attention of the then political police, PIDE. Shortly afterwards, this resistance forced him to flee to Algeria, where he stayed for a few years before settling in France and beginning what would become his academic career.
In this painful farewell to Adelino Torres, a farewell he describes in one of his poems (Here lies someone / who would rather not have gone / who proves to the most stubborn / that will alone is not enough), one cannot fail to highlight his brilliant side as a pedagogue, which was embodied in one of his favorite phrases: "Without students, my existence is unjustified". His generosity towards them was immeasurable. Endowed with enormous curiosity and scientific acumen, he was hardly content with simplistic explanations (as he writes in a poem Understanding/is not a way of knowing/but a way of being) and this led him to instill in his students and encourage them to read philosophy of knowledge, in particular the critical rationalism so dear to Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos. He left unpublished works on philosophy and, in particular, African philosophy, one of his last passions.
Tutondele (thank you) Adelino Torres.

Bearing in mind the tradition of Reading Clubs as a privileged forum for the free debate of ideas, and in association with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of '25 de Abril, 1974', the theme for this first year of the initiative is freedom. For subsequent years, the theme of the initiative will be discussed and defined in consultation with the Clubs that make up the Network of Higher Education Reading Clubs.
Accordingly, the National Reading Plan (PNL) together with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education , has opened the application period for funding to support the launch of these clubs.
With the creation of this Reading Club Network, known as the NLP together with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education , the objective is to provide these informal organisations with a structured space where they can share good practices and encounter inspiring reading suggestions. The tendency is that networking encourages the founding of more clubs nationwide, ideally in all existing higher education institutions.
The funds are destined to stimulate the founding and development of a network of Higher Education Reading Clubs, to share good practices, and to provide the necessary tools to support the founding of new clubs for Higher Education students, who in effect are considered indirect recipients, as the financial support is granted to third parties who intervene as beneficiaries.
Applications should be submitted via the dedicated form, from Directorate-General of Higher Education (DGES) and should include the Action Plan to be developed over a period of one year, taking into account the evaluation criteria, as well as the express written commitment of the head of the Club to carry out the project, which is intended to be ongoing and sustainable.
Applications may be submitted as from the first working day following the publication of this notice up until the deadline of the 30th March, 2024.

The national phase of the Global Management Challenge took place on the 22nd February. After an intense day's work, the eight teams that had made it through to the national final once again had to manage a company to the best of their capabilities. They had to make five decisions about the future of the business.
Filipa Pereira, a student of MAEG and an intern in the risk area at Banco Montepio, was part of the "Accenture" team, which won 3rd place, together with Diogo Ventura (a student of the Masters in International Business at Universidade do Minho), Inês Oliveira (a student of the Masters in Engineering Project Management at Universidade do Minho), António Correia (a student of the degree in Applied Mathematics for Risk Management at Universidade Nova de Lisboa), and Rita Simões (a student of the Integrated Maste's in Chemical Engineering at Universidade do Aveiro).
The Global Management Challenge is the largest international strategy and management competition, which originated in Portugal and is present in more than 30 countries. It consists of an interactive business simulation in which each team manages a company with the aim of obtaining the best investment performance for their company in the market in which it operates.
The awards ceremony was attended by the Vice-Dean of ISEG, Professor José Veríssimo,, as well as the Advisor to the Dean's Office, Filomena Ferreira.

Accenture team during the decision-making process.

Award of the certificate of participation to the Accenture team that came 3rd in the GMC national final.

Filomena Ferreira, Advisor to the Dean's Office and Student Ombudsman at ISEG, and Filipa Pereira.
Filipa Pereira spoke to us about her experience competing in the GMC:
“The GMC is more than just a competition; it's an interactive business simulation that reproduces the dynamic and complex environment of real companies. With the objective to optimise the company's investment performance, each team is challenged to make decisions in various areas in the face of competition while needing to adapt to economic fluctuations.
My time competing in the GMC was marked by continuous learning and teamwork. We had to carefully analyse historical data, define strategies, and make crucial decisions under pressure. The experience provided fertile ground for applying the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom, especially for someone like me, whose degree is more focused on the technical side of mathematics. On a more personal level, the GMC was an opportunity to immerse myself in a challenging and enriching environment, where I was able to apply and fine-tune my strategy and management skills.
I'm delighted to say that my team came 3rd out of 480 teams in this edition of the GMC, which is a significant improvement from 7th Place awarded last year. This positive result was achieved thanks to the commitment and dedication of all the team members, as well as the theoretical background and guidance received from ISEG, which proved to be an indispensable asset. May this experience serve as an inspiration for future generations of ISEG students and encouraging them to explore new horizons and constantly strive to achieve excellence in everything they do."
This award is a joint initiative between Santander and the Expresso , which is designed for all 2nd Year Master's students, who are Portuguese nationals and are graduates of a 1st Cycle degree in any area of knowledge.
