435 New ISEG Students Join in Solidarity Action

Next Friday, September 13, the new undergraduate students at ISEG - Lisbon School of Economics & Management will be swapping the classroom for volunteering, in defense of not wasting food and protecting the environment. More than 400 students will be involved in a day of solidarity.

This is already a tradition at ISEG, which holds a Solidarity Day every year for first-year undergraduates, in order to help them integrate and introduce them to the humanist and sustainability-promoting values of the country's first Economics and Management school, the one that receives the most new students every year.

This year, ISEG wants to make its students aware of sustainable causes, namely with very concrete actions to combat food waste (in collaboration with Refood), to promote the recycling and reuse of objects (in partnership with the nearby Misericórdia Parish Council) and to improve urban cleanliness, in a joint action with the Estrela Council, right in the center of Lisbon, where ISEG is located. The new students will take part in various actions, including cleaning streets and gardens around ISEG, together with various urban hygiene technicians, and publicizing the activities of Refood, an organization that fights food waste and hunger.

Solidarity Day doesn't stop there, and young students are taking part in the "Viver Misericórdia" (Living Mercy) project by distributing reusable cups in local stores, raising awareness of the harmful effects of traditional plastic cups. This initiative is the result of a partnership with Turismo de Portugal, which aims to improve the quality of life of the residents of the parish and their relationship with the tourists who visit.

" Located in the heart of Lisbon, ISEG is concerned with the sustainability of its city and the civic education of its students. Here we train people who, in order to be good professionals, need to be actively involved in their community" explains Clara Raposo, President of the Business School. " With this type of initiative we aim to show the more human and responsible side of hazing, which can be positive - in fact, we all have an important role to play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN, in order to promote prosperity and well-being for all" adds the Dean of ISEG.
