The winners of the 2025 ISEG ESG Award were on stage at the Web Summit Lisbon, on Thursday, 13 November, at the world's largest innovation and technology event, to share their ideas and reflections on the role of business and academia in building more sustainable cities.
The “Lisboa Sustainable Minds: Shaping a Greener Future for Business - What if companies could shape the future of cities through ESG?”session, moderated by Professor Winnie Picoto, Vice-Dean of ISEG, gave visibility to the talent and vision of the students who represented ISEG at this highly prestigious event.
This moment underlines the importance of the link between academic work in sustainability and its application in the real world, demonstrating how the knowledge produced in universities can support companies and other organisations in responding to the environmental, social and governance challenges that are of unavoidable relevance today. The participation of our students in the Web Summit highlights the real impact of ISEG's research and its contribution to concrete solutions that inspire sustainable transformation.
Special thanks to the students Madalena Santos, Miguel Lopes and Joana Ramos, to Prof. Winnie Picoto, to Gabriel Londe Medeiros, to Maria João, to Nuno Caleia and Paula Alves of the Lisboa Sustentável-Empresas Platform of the Lisbon City Council, and to Pedro Fonseca and Catarina Pedrinho from NTT DATA, great partners thus far, for the involvement and dedication that made this moment of sharing and inspiration possible.
The ULISSES - Universidade de Lisboa Interdisciplinary Studies on Sustainable Environment and Seas (Interdisciplinary Studies on the Sustainability of the Environment and Oceans) is a project that provides an in-depth knowledge of ocean-related issues.
Aimed at students willing to join a multidisciplinary team made up of colleagues from other Portuguese and foreign universities, this initiative takes place over several weeks, during which students will be challenged to come up with solutions that meet the current challenges of ocean sustainability.
Students from the EU and other Erasmus+ partner countries can apply for scholarships at their home university to support mobility expenses.
The ULISSES project is organised by Unite! (University Network for Innovation, Technology and Engineering), an Alliance of European Universities that promotes collaborative, transdisciplinary and multilingual higher education, prepared to respond to major global challenges.

ISEG expresses its sorrow at the departure of Francisco José Pereira Pinto de Balsemão. He had been a member of ISEG's Advisory Board throughout its existence, since 2010.
Invited to join this body because of the example he set throughout his life - for his work in defence of democracy, freedom and public life - ISEG was always able to count on his support, participating constructively whenever asked to do so.
ISEG sends its profound condolences to the family.
For the first time, ISEG Bachelor's, Master's and PhD graduates receive their diplomas wearing the new ISEG academic attire, a symbol of identity and belonging to our School.
This exclusive piece was designed by Inês Simões, coordinator of the degree in Design and Fashion at ULisboa's Faculty of Architecture, and is distinguished by its elegant cut in red fabric, seams with white sealing tape and the use of ultrasonic construction technology. Each gown is also personalised with the ISEG logo, in reference to our students' pride and connection to the School.
More than academic attire, the ISEG 'Beca' represents a mark of recognition and celebration, making our graduation ceremonies even more special and memorable.

ISEG is holding two awareness-raising sessions dedicated to emergency procedures for the entire academic community. The objective is to prioritise everyone's safety on campus by reinforcing the preparedness of the community and the ability to respond to critical situations, such as fires, earthquakes or other unexpected occurrences.
The sessions take place on 1 October, from 14.30 to 16.30, in Auditorium 5 (Quelhas 6), and on 6 October, at the same time, in Auditorium 2 (Quelhas 6).
The sessions will be free to attend, will be held in Portuguese and will attempt to provide practical guidance that can make a difference in times of risk.
ISEG calls on the whole community to take part, reminding people that knowing the right procedures can save lives.
