Biography
Alexandre Abreu is an Associate Professor in the Economics Department of ISEG (Lisbon School of Economics & Management, ULisboa, Portugal) and a researcher and member of the Board at CEsA – Centre of African and Development Studies. He is one of the coordinators of the PhD Programme in Development Studies of the University of Lisbon and a member of ISEG’s Ethics Committee. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). His main research interests include development economics, political economy, poverty and inequality.
Alexandre’s early academic training took place at ISEG with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics (2003) and a Master’s in Development and International Cooperation (2006). He then pursued his doctoral studies at SOAS – University of London, where he obtained his PhD (2012) with a thesis on the political economy of development in Guinea-Bissau. His subsequent professional trajectory included periods working for The Economist Intelligence Unit, the Overseas Development Institute, and as an advisor to the Government of Timor-Leste and the g7+ Secretariat.
Outside of academia, Alexandre has written numerous op-ed commentaries on economic and political affairs for the newspaper Expresso and featured regularly on television. He is currently a member of the editorial boards of the journal Mundo Crítico – Revista de Desenvolvimento e Cooperação and the Portuguese edition of Le Monde Diplomatique. He is also a member of the Municipal Assembly of Cascais.
Since re-joining ISEG in 2018, Alexandre has been committed to undertaking rigorous and meaningful research with a progressive social impact and to motivating and training the next generations of researchers, professionals and citizens.
