ISEG launches the Gender, Labour, and Power Observatory

ISEG inaugurated the Gender, Labour, and Power Observatory, today, on the 14th November. The objective of the Observatory is to monitor and disseminate essential data on gender inequalities in the labour market , as well as in economic decision-making processes.

The Observatory's first two barometers were presented for the first time at this launch event:

  1. The Women vs. Men Labour Force Participation Rate Barometer;
  2. The Gender Pay Gap Barometer.

These studies reveal how women and men experience significant differences in various areas, ranging from employment rates through to the types of occupation affected by the wage gap, drawing attention to the inequalities that still persist in our country.

The objective of this initiative is to encourage an informed debate and support the development of policies that bring about full and equal opportunities.

Find out about the barometers and further information HERE.

ISEG students have a unique experience at Gato Preto and explore Content Creation in practice

ISEG's 3rd Year Management, Economics, and MAEG students had the opportunity to carry out a practical Content Creation activity for social networks, with the Gato Preto Christmas collection. The initiative was led by Carolina Afonso, the CEO of Gato Preto and an ISEG professor of Digital Marketing and Social Networks, who provided the students the opportunity to experience the process of creating digital content in an authentic setting.

The students immersed themselves in the challenge of creating content and storytelling for social media about the Gato Preto Christmas Collection during a visit to the Gato Preto store in the Colombo Shopping Centre and the magical Christmas House, which was full of decorative elements and inspiring scenery.

This type of experience not only enriches our students' learning, but also prepares them to face the challenges of the job market with a spirit of creativity and innovation.

New Book Offers Global Insights on COVID-19's Impact on Student Learning

Nuno Crato (ISEG, University of Lisbon) and Harry A. Patrinos (University of Arkansas) have edited a new book published by Springer, Improving National Education Systems After COVID-19, offering a global evaluation of the severe impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted on student learning, as evidenced by the independent international comparative surveys Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, or PIRLS, 2021, and Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, 2022. This volume not only highlights the challenges faced by students and educators during this unprecedented time but also proposes actionable strategies to mitigate these effects and enhance educational resilience in the future.

The 12 countries discussed in this book represent a wide variety of educational systems-including Chile, Ecuador, England, Estonia, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and the USA, including both high performers and countries that are struggling to attain the OECD average. Each country has its history that reflects efforts to cope with pandemic school closures and is discussed by one of its foremost national experts.

The idea for this book came about after convening a roundtable on PIRLS and PISA results at the Lisbon Economics and Statistics of Education (LESE) meeting last January at ISEG. It was the seventh meeting of this biennial conference, and five authors of this book were present.

We invite you to explore this essential resource, which is now available as open access HERE.
