ISEG mini-forest | 5th practical workshop

The removal of the pampas grass is nearly complete! On the 20th December, from 11:00 to 16:30 we will be in the field to continue our work. Just turn up any time during the day and join in for as long as you can. Please bring along a cup, so that we can give you a hot tea. There will also be a snack to cheer you up.

In January, we will mark out the design on the ground and start planting.

You can start inviting friends, colleagues and family to come and help us!

We're going to need a lot of hands!

The mini-forest and its creation process are part of the TERRARE - action research for social and ecological regeneration, a project that is being developed by the researcher Oriana Rainho Brás at SOCIUS/CSG, with the support of ISEG Sustainability, as well as the collaboration of the biologist António Alexandre from 2Adapt-Serviços de Adaptação Climática and FCUL, and the partnership of ValorSul-Valorização e Tratamento de Resíduos Sólidos das Regiões de Lisboa e do Oeste, SA, which provides the organic compost for soil enrichment. ISEG mini-forest | 4th practical workshop

Let's clear the ground for planting!

We now know the Miyawaki method of urban mini-forests.
We took soil samples for analysis.
We weeded out invasive exotic plants.
We pruned the species that will remain in the space.
We collected all the rubbish.
We mapped out the space.
We created the design of the mini-forest.

Now it's time to clear the land to mark out the design and carry out the planting!

On 14th December, Thursday, at 13.00, we'll meet on campus next to the Library to weed out any remaining invasive species and prepare the space for marking out the paths and clearings. These steps are very important and are carried out before the planting. Join us. We're going to need as many hands as possible!

The mini-forest and its creation process are part of the TERRARE - Action research for social and ecological regenerationproject, which is being developed by the SOCIUS/CSG researcher Oriana Rainho Brás, supported by 'ISEG Sustainability' with the collaboration of biologist António Alexandre from 2Adapt-Serviços de Adaptação Climática and FCUL, and in partnership with ValorSul-Valorização e Tratamento de Resíduos Sólidos das Regiões de Lisboa e do Oeste, SA, which is supplying the organic compost to enrich the soil.

The object of the TERRARE project is to reflect on the eco-social processes involved in creating an urban mini-forest with the participation of the university community and to understand the dynamics of research into soil regeneration through reforestation and community involvement. ISEG's mini-forest follows the Miyawaki method, which is characterised by the dense planting of native species belonging to all the strata of a forest, which subsequently enables them to grow rapidly in spaces as small as 300m2. The mini-forest model provides multiple benefits, such as: the diversification of the local fauna and flora, carbon absorption, water fixation, thermal regulation and soil regeneration, as well as improving the well-being of humans and more-than-humans and representing an enormous potential for nature-related learning.

To take part, all you need to do is register here or contact researcher Oriana Rainho Brás at orianarb@socius.iseg.ulisboa.pt.

We look forward to seeing you!

ISEG mini-forest | 3rd practical workshop

Would you like to take part in the next practical mini-forest workshop?

On 16th November, from 12.00 to 13.30, ISEG's third mini-forest workshopwill take place, facilitated by researcher Oriana Rainho Brás (SOCIUS/CSG-ISEG) and biologist António Alexandre (FCUL/2Adapt).

Participation is free, subject to pre-registration on this website. LINK

During the last workshop, the collective design process for the mini-forest was so creative, that we need another workshop to finish it off! We already have several ideas on paper, which we'll discuss and integrate into a single design that will then be implemented. For those of you who were unable to participate in the last workshop, now is your chance to join in, and for those who have just heard about it for the first time, we guarantee it's worth it!

How do we imagine the ISEG mini-forest? Which humans and more-than-humans will live in the forest and what needs do they have? How will we organize the space and what structures are needed? We will answer these questions in a creative, ecological and participatory way in order to create an inclusive space that connects with nature and people, and that is suited to the needs and desires of the ISEG university community.

The mini-forest workshops are part of the TERRARE - action research for social and ecological regenerationproject, which is coordinated by researcher Oriana Rainho Brás (SOCIUS/CSG-ISEG), with the collaboration of biologist António Alexandre (FCUL and 2Adapt). Valorsul-Valorização e Tratamento de Resíduos Sólidos das Regiões de Lisboa e do Oeste, SA. is a partner in the project, supplying the organic compost to enrich the soil.

Urban mini-forests can be as small as a tennis court, where we densely plant dozens of native species, imitating the structure of a mature forest. This configuration stimulates the growth of plants that support each other, accelerating the process of natural succession. Community participation is essential for the creation and care of the mini-forest. This is a practical and sensitive way of learning and acting for personal, social and ecological well-being in the city.

The invitation is open to all interested parties and participation is free. Registration HERE

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to get in touch: orianarb@socius.iseg.ulisboa.pt

ISEG mini-forest | 2nd practical workshop registration now open

Admission is free, subject to pre-registration on this LINK.

Following on from the work begun on October 25, we will be working on the mini-forest designbased on the principles of the Miyawaki method applied to urban forests.

How do we imagine the ISEG mini-forest? Which humans and more than humans will live in the forest and what needs do they have? How will we organize the space and what structures are needed? We will answer these questions in a creative, ecological and participatory way to create a space that is inclusive, connects with nature and people, and is suited to the needs and desires of the ISEG university community.
