Bento de Jesus Caraça was one of the biggest names in Portuguese scientific culture in the 20th century. Known as a mathematician, publicist, professor and even political activist, he spent his entire professional life at the School of Economics and Management, the predecessor of the Institute that is now known by the same name (ISEG). In the book Bento de Jesus Caraça - Inéditos de Economia Matemática , economist Carlos Bastien brings together completely unpublished texts by Bento de Jesus Caraça that reveal this lesser-known side of him.
In the book Bento de Jesus Caraça - Inéditos de Economia Matemática, which is part of the Temas de Matemática collection resulting from a collaboration between the Portuguese Mathematical Society (SPM) and Gradiva and whose publication was supported by the Center for Mathematics Applied to Forecasting and Economic Decision (CEMAPRE), it is possible to clearly perceive the convergence of social and scientific interests of Bento de Jesus Caraça, a personality who combined exceptional teaching qualities with a profound knowledge of mathematics, an unparalleled ability to disseminate science and a fierce defense of freedom and scientific criticism.
In the compilation of texts that is now being published, based on the manuscripts of Bento de Jesus Caraça that were discovered in the archives of the ISEG and the Mário Soares Foundation, we have access to completely unpublished texts - namely his degree thesis, a work on neoclassical economics from 1923. As the book's organizer, Carlos Bastien, says, "I found a series of documents, most of which have never been mentioned in published studies. To a large extent, I found the Caraça I was looking for, a dimension that is undoubtedly important for reconstructing his profile as a man of culture and as a citizen."

He is also credited with several works of dissemination and intervention, namely the famous Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics and The Integral Culture of the Individual. He was one of the founders of the Center for the Study of Mathematics Applied to Economics, in 1938, and of the Portuguese Mathematical Society, in 1940. He was president of the SPM in 1943-1944 and a frequent contributor to its Gazette. The Salazar government expelled him from university teaching in 1946. He died in Lisbon in 1948 of heart disease.
